  • Stayin alive...?

Poor xanga. I hope it gets some lovins soon, cause facebook is ruling the roost. Which is also kinda sad, cause facebook seems like its close to jumping the shark. S'what happens when you make things less exclusive and more mindless.

    Anyway...!

My last two quarters have been full of exhausting, hard work, but it was worth every minute, cause my art is looking alot better, and I'm finding I have a style. Just to update.

If you're not aware, I'm spending the summer in an apartment in Savannah, and spending a summer away from home is more stretching than I realized. But its pretty cool too, cause I'm noticing already how God is changing me, and how I'm realizing things about myself and others than I'm not sure I would have if I was doing the same old-same old.

I'm taking just one class, Illustration Self-Promotion, and that alone is wonderful. My professor is not only well-informed and skilled, but she's also a Christian. What a sweet relief.

Alot of folks ask me what self-promotion is, and its kind of self explanatory. I'm learning the art of advertising my business of illustration. 85% of illustration is freelancing, so I likely won't get jobs unless I spread the word to art directors (and family and friends ha) that I'm an artist who'd like to work (and eat, sure). At the moment I'm working on my mailer, which is a cryptic word for a postcard. The postcard is an illustrator's business card. It grabs your attention more than a tiny scrap of paper that only has your name and contact on it.

Or you can do things the easy way and get an agent to represent you and spread the news of your skills, but they take some of your money, too. Oh, the humanity!

I realize I'm probably rambling about boring things to absolutely no one, cause no one uses Xanga, but I'm okay with that. It's called catharsis.

Though, in all honesty, I might get a blogspot or livejournal or somethin. I'm not sure I like all the changes xanga's made to the interface, and I'm kind of enjoying rambling mindlessly to no one. Takes the pressure off of impressing people!

Four more months and I am entirely finished with school. Scary? Sort of.

My temporary website; I'll have a new one in a few weeks, still deciding on a domain name. http://ellembee.carbonmade.com/  Alot of the comics are pretty dated, I'm sure you'll figure it out.

  • Figured I'd update this even though we've all moved on to facebook.

I still have no real art to post, because my children's book is still in the sketchy stage, and my sequential prof won't return our stuff. If we're not allowed to work at a snail's pace, he should start grading faster, haha.

For friends back home who are still befuddled by the term 'sequential art' : clicky.

I signed up for classes next quarter, and I can't wait. This current quarter is devouring my soul. More computer illustration, senior portfolio, and advanced comic writing. Whats not to look forward to?

The person I miss won't even read this, but I realized I have a really difficult time with goodbyes. Even if its for a month, or three months, or who knows when. Maybe thats why weddings aren't as happy for me as they honestly should be. And I don't even know when I started associating weddings with goodbyes... Maybe in some cases, 'goodbye' isn't as bad as you think. Maybe you'll stop relying so much on that person/relationship/idea and start relying on God more. I'm thinkin thats my problem. And it doesn't give me the right to start detaching from friends without any warning.

My mom's comin to visit this weekend, so thats pretty keen. Anyone interested in a spring fling in savannah and/or florida...? The St. Patty's Day parade here really isn't that amazing, trust me. There's plenty more to do without getting trampled by the masses of drunks and screaming children.

  • It's official.

    I'm engaged!!!!

    Just kidding.

Though if you wanted, we could say I'm married to SCAD, with all the time I put into it. Sometimes I cheat on SCAD and mess around with Mr. Computer, though. I'm so full of scandal.

Just had a meeting with fellow Disney Campus Reps this morning. Was kinda fun to talk about the good and the bad, or just talk about Disney with other normal people, and learn lots of cool little secrets. Like about the upcoming ground breaking of their new super secret awesome and somewhat unmagical park. Ooooh...

Realized this morning that I get this pass that gets me and up to three people into the parks for free. Which is pretty keen. Spring break will definitely be in the southern hemisphere this year. Anyone interested?

And the trip on my birthday was pretty cool, with the exception of the rain that soaked every little princess and pirate in sight.

Nothing deep to talk about today. I'm working on very little sleep. I'll post some art someday.

My sequential professors were right. Drawing vomit is alot funnier than it sounds.

I think we've established that my nerditivity is whats official, today.

At least Mary still likes me!

  • Art History is: ....I can't wait until we get out of Byzantine and really start learning about Medieval. Hoy!

Pencil & Ink for Comics is: ...the professor pointed to his heart yesterday and told us it was locked away in a tall, inaccesible tower. Need I say more?

Children's Book is: The one class I'm really and truly excited about and dedicated to! My old scripting prof got back to me about my manuscript, so I'm feeling great about the story. If only I had more time to really put my heart into it.

I'll be working like a maniac all week due to the school trip to Orlando this weekend, thus restricting my work-time, thus leading to pre-stated insanity. I was kind of asking for it, but hey.

I have to say it again: Art school is not for pansies.

Also: ...DisneyWorld better be worth it!!

Don't you hate it when you realize you've reached a point with someone where conversation is just awkwardly short, as opposed to what it used to be? It just makes me wanna kick a can into the street...

  • Thanks all, for the well-wishes on my last entry. Those mean alot, more than you know.

Classes are in full swing and its either my morale or God's grace (probably both), but I feel ready for the chaos, which doesn't even feel as chaotic as it could be.

Medieval Art & Architecture: My last art history class at scad. The subject matter isn't exactly, um, epic, but the professor seems pretty keen, so I think he'll make it interesting. (And he's loud enough that I can hear, whew!)

Pencil & Inking for Comics: We're not even doing any inking, cause the department is changing this class as its being conducted. Sucks to my assmar. I'm a little dissapointed with that, but on the plus side I'm gonna learn alot and have great deals of fun with Larison's last quarter here. He shall be missed.

Children's Book Illustration: Exciting! This is something I wanted to do when I 'grew up'. I was five at the time. (weird kid, I know.) By brainstorming with Rinzee (we're like the wonder twins or something) I got slammed by what I think is a really good idea for a manuscript. Or good enough; at least now I won't have to resort to jacking a fairy tale or just doing an alphabet book. Class should be alot more fun once I have my idea set in stone and approved!

In two days of each other, two guys asked if I wanted to hang out, or something along those lines. Even if its just as friendlies, this is so foreign to me. So foreign that I'm tempted to take my mace everywhere with me. Wouldn't that be a good excuse.

guy: so what are you doin after this?
me: ehhhh, I better not. I left my pepper spray behind.

Happiness is learning how to rip french disney music from youtube onto your ipod.  J'ai fait mon choix!
